A Pension Plan for People who are Self-Employed

I am a fan of Derek Foster and his investment strategies. (He describes the way he became Canada’s youngest retiree at the age of 34 in his books, which I highly recommend.) On February 23rd, I had the pleasure of hearing him speak at the Ottawa Public Library. He didn’t disappoint.

In the interview (click the link above) and the presentation at the library, he mentioned the Saskatchewan Pension Plan as an option for creating an income stream after retirement. The SPP is open to anyone. I did not know that!

What a great option for people who are self-employed!

The Memory Jar: An Alternative to Journalling and Blogging

Many of you know that my daughter and I started an annual goal-setting ritual in 2004. Over the years, I have told many people the story about how it got started, particularly in workshops where the subject of goal-setting comes up.

Yesterday, I found Pinterest and this great idea for doing a year-end review. The example in the article is a personal application, and suggests stashing notes of quotable quotes and “happenings” over the year into a jar, for “debriefing” somewhere around December 31st. But you could place it on your desk, and add notes about events, accomplishments, and milestones that are work-related as well.

If you find journalling tedious or blogging “too public,” the Memory Jar holds great possibilities. You could also stash the year’s goals in there, to compare to what actually happened.

The One-Page Book: Now There’s an Idea!

Many of you know that I am a Seth Godin fan. Not because I subscribe to everything he says, but because he dares to freely share his wild ideas and vague musings. Also, I love his vision for the New Dynamics of Book Publishing.

Today I received this Domino Project update about the idea of the One-Page Book, a term that Jess Bachman uses to describe his new book, Death & Taxes.

Now, as a writer (or would-be writer) this caught my attention. I have written lots of one-page books! But then I thought, ah… isn’t this called a… poster? Or, more popular lately, an infographic?

Anyway. Thanks, Jess, for the reframe. And, Seth, for telling us about it. I think I’m going to go look through my files.

Do you have any one-page books to share?
